Margaret Wilkinson welcomes new Branch President, Mary Durcan, with the Branch President’s badge of office.

The Branch was inaugurated in 1956 and currently there are 8 Sections based around the Diocese – Bridlington, Cottingham, Driffield, Easingwold, Hull St Joseph’s, Ormesby St Gabriel’s, Thornaby and York (who meet at St Wilfred’s).

At present there are 160 members, including 7 Direct Members.

Middlesbrough is part of Region 1 which includes Hexham and Newcastle and Leeds. The Regional Officers meet 4 times a year to exchange and share ideas.

Members are invited to attend the Annual Branch retreat at
Ampleforth Abbey.

The members are very involved in their own Parishes with visiting the sick and lonely, being Ministers of the Word, Ministers of Holy Communion, being involved in Children’s Sunday Liturgy, Catechesis, preparation for the Sacraments, representing  their church on Churches Together, taking part in Women’s World Day of Prayer

Services, Good Friday Walks of Witness and Christian Unity Acts of Worship.

Sections have Days of Recollection, assist at Lenten Lunches, fill shoeboxes for Romania and for the Apostleship of the Sea, help Sisters in Peru and help with Flower Festivals.

Social Activities help members to support many charities across the Branch: CAFOD, SVP, FIND, Wheelchairs for Lourdes, Lourdes Sick Fund, the Hollistic Centre at a local hospital, the Neo-natal Unit, Zoe’s Place (a hospice for babies and young children) and the Alzheimers Society.

Members enjoy outings to the theatre, Markenfield Hall, Christmas Dinners and Lunches and numerous Cake Stalls to support the charities. CWL charities are also supported.

One member received a Papal Blessing for her work in her parish.

Members are very active in writing to MPs and the House of Lords on various important Christian issues.

Each member contributes what they can – be it quiet prayer at home or full Section activity.

Being a member of the League is a great way to discover one’s talents and gifts.

Elizabeth Rodgers, Branch Secretary
